Hello everybody! Just picked up my 2022 RS yesterday. So far I am loving it!
However, I’m having some issues with the Apple car play. I cannot seem to find a clear answer on if you need WiFi or not?? I was under the impression you could connect with just Bluetooth…and I’m not really willing to pay for the onstar subscription after the trial. This would be a huuuuuge bummer.
I also am having problems with it connecting right away…seems to be when I leave my house where i am already connected to wifi??

You dont need to pay for anything extra to use carplay. Wifi connection is from phone to car stereo. All the data/internet connection being used is from the phone.

It should connected wirelessly (bluetooth) with your phone. Do you have bluetooth enabled on your phone? One of the first things that should've happened is the car should've "located" your phone and walked you through the pairing process.

First of all, nice TB!! I use Android Auto, not Apple, but believe the setup is the same. It sounds like you are connecting to your home WIFI and NOT to your car WIFI. The TB comes with its own WIFI. Here is how it works (basically). You open your phone and turn on Bluetooth (if your have paired your phone to your radio). Then open CARPLAY on the radio, it should then connect to your phone and open your wifi on your phone connected to your car wifi, NOT your home wifi. Turn on Mobile Data on your phone too. Need step by step directions just go to YOUTUBE and search on Carplay and you will find a lot of videos on how to set up, etc. But your problem seems to be it is connecting to your home wifi (while you are near your home/garage) and NOT your Car WIFI.

Correct. My CarPlay connects automatically to my car wi-fi (not cell phone).

The wireless Apple Car Play connects via WiFi. On the iPhone: Settings, General, CarPlay. Should see this:

Were your tires with the red and white lettering an option?? I have seen many RS models, mine included and never seen with colored lettering. Mine say "kinergy and hankook" but nothing about RS and nothing with color.
Tire stickers/labels.

Those are my touch. Tirestickers.com They have a huge selection of fonts and sizes. I did the "create my own" and added the RS and picked Red as the color for the RS and the Hankook logo. Tirestickers.com have either permanent rubber stickers that you glue on (that's what I did) or a peel and stick option that only last a few months. Highly recommend checking them out! PS: know your exact tire size b4 going to their website. They give you a recommendation on the size, height wise👍

Congrats on your RS. I also have a '22 RS and love it.

As to the Apple CarPlay connection issues, I experienced the same thing when I first had my RS. After the first few trips in the ride, when I started up for the next trip my phone wasn't connected - had to go through reconnecting it. Since then, about 3 1/2 months of ownership, it has lost the connection a couple of times, but nothing consistent. I've never found a root cause, but have just chalked it up to the vagaries of modern technology. When its happened, I've restarted my phone and it has connected.

I know this doesn't give you a solution, just offering some commiseration. 😕

I work at US Cellular and am an Apple Master Pro and have seen these issues with wireless Apple CarPlay. One thing I've noticed is if you have an active VPN running on your iPhone, connections get "reset" time to time. Also making sure the software updates are done can help as well. Depending on the iPhone, doing a simulated "battery pull" make fix this problem too...not just turning off and on the phone, doing a series of button presses to do a soft reboot. It's usually the first troubleshooting step we do at work. Hopefully this helps.
