Hi all,

The first thing I usually do with a new vehicle is replace the air filter with a high-flow one from K&N to improve performance. However, the car is new so I don't see any specific to the Trailblazer on their website. Does anyone know if it uses the same filter as another vehicle so I can find one that might be compatible?

I called K&N and asked if they had anything for our Trailblazers and nothing yet. One version of the 2020-2021 Buick Encore GX is supposedly the same, but not sure about the air filter housing.

And I'm sure they're short-handed right now due to the pandemic as far as engineers go, so it's probably gonna be a while... :(

Prob going to be a bit for many things for this SUV. I worry even about stock parts on the thing that may go bad. I wonder if any of the parts of the car are made here in the states or all sources in SK?

I've noticed that Rock Auto and Summit Racing have been slowly adding more replacement parts each week to their inventory which is a good sign. Just 2 weeks ago Summit Racing only had 250 parts available and now they're up over 600 parts.

You could call a Chevy dealer and ask the parts dept what the P/N for the air filter is and then call a Buick dealer and ask what the P/N for an air filter is for a 2020 Buick Encore GX with 1.3 If they match then you could see if K&N has a filter for the Buick and by that one.
I have been looking at suppliers for normal maintenance items, and there is not much out there right now. Most items are GM original parts if it is available

First thing I also do is replace my air filter with a K&N. Since K&N doesn’t list a filter for the TB or the Encore GX I took the filter out hoping it would be a rectangular panel filter and I could find a match amongst the stock filters K&N list. Unfortunately it’s an odd trapezoidal shape. I think the filter for a Encore GX will fit the TB. I downloaded both the Encore GX the TB owner manuals PDFs and the engine compartment pictures are identical in both manuals

Yeah as soon as I saw the filter I knew we were gonna have problems, lol. K&N will eventually make one, but it might be a while because of that weird shape and demand has to be there too. I've bugged them a few times now so maybe if we all start harassing them we might get some results. I know I'd like to see a real intake kit made to give this little engine all the air it can handle.

The car is assembled in SK, the parts are manufactured in many various places (mexico, japan, china, etc). The only thing I'd really be concerned of are parts specific to the 3 cylinder engine since those aren't shared with other GM models save for the encore gx. Most everything else mechanical should be from GM's general parts bucket that are pretty widely used across models.

So got some news guys and gals (granted this was an experimental version but...

1. It does work (ran about 50 miles after install)
2. Actually decently cheap (about 40-50$ for this experimental version)
3. The maf housing was for (get ready to laugh) a honda civic (M8B7 70 mm)
4.Yes it does give the tubo fluttler sounds
5.About the same fuel economy (i was heavier on the pedal because yanno turbo flutter and only seen a difference of about 0.1 mpg over 50 miles)
6. Yes that is the stock airvox base as you would either have to:
A. Have a hanger or bracket to hold the intake and housing up

Or

B. Just lay the intake inside of the airbox as i did which actually doesn't move around a whole lot if at all (i checked every so often about 5 times during the trip)

50 mile test range was city and open roads as well so it was a mix of both with no issues.

I'll keep everyone updated but for now this does work

It can take up to 100 miles before the computer fully adjusts to the added airflow. Do you think the filter added any hp, even 5hp?

No engine codes yet and i had it scanned for secondary codes that would lie underneath but maybe not trip the code.

Performance wise it feels about the same, i mean i was heavier on the pedal and gas was 0.1 mpg worse so it could be a small gain performance wise but with this version just being an experimental kind I'd say it's about the same feel wise in terms of performance but I'm not gonna say there is or isn't an increase just because i honestly have no idea

Now again the setup being no name pieces could have an effect that is less than so say K&N, Injen, Spectre or any other more well know intake/ air filter company

So I ran and reset it again about another 50 miles and seen an average of about 34.5mpg while still being kinda heavy on the pedal at times with the intake setup so i will say at least for now there seems to be a slight mpg increase

Honestly your pieced together setup is about the same as what any of those companies would come up with. The only extra part they would make is a heat shield unless someone decides to make a true "cold air intake" and makes a roto molded box to house the filter. The only downside to your setup and even some of K&N's intakes is heat soak. The factory air box is decent and does pull in cold air.

All honestly i wasn't planning on this setup working how it did, but it works better than i thought and it's at the least "successful" and gives everyone a version to go off of as far as a custom fab one comes
